Peewee Hockey Drills OMHA

I have found a bunch of Peewee hockey drills that I wanted to share. The drills focus on puck control, stickhandling, shooting, skating, acceleration, agility and more. These drills were developed by the OMHA and posted on home town hockey . These drills are republished with permission from the OMHA

Drill Time Drill Description
15 Puck Control
  • Players weave through pylons, carrying the puck, then take a shot on net
  • Players stickhandle through zone, performing different moves
  • On coach’s signal, players weave through pylons, racing for the puck
    • First player takes a shot
    • Second player tries to prevent shot

Drill Time Drill Description
5 Shootout
  • Two lines facing each end of the ice
  • Line on left has players down on one knee
  • Line on right is a player with puck
  • On coach’s signal, player with puck skates towards the net for a shot, player on one knee has to play the back checker, and try to catch the puck carrier
  • Switch lines after each attempt

Drill Time Drill Description
10 Pond Hockey
  • 2 games of 3 on 3 cross ice
  • On whistle players playing switch with players in neutral zone
  • Use 1 puck, or two pucks, tennis balls, soccer balls

5 Chaos
  • Players skate all over the ice stick stickhandling
  • On whistle, all players move to one half of the ice
  • On next whistle, all players move inside the blueline
  • On next whistle, all players move inside the goal line

5 Short Pass /Long Pass
  • Players partner up
  • One player has puck
  • Short pass
  • Long pass
  • Alternate until coach signals drill is over

Drill Time Drill Description
20 3 station move
  • Players start in each corner
    • 01 makes bank pass off boards to 02
    • 01 skates through pylons
    • 02 hits passer in the slot for a shot on net
    • Alternate sides
  • Players start on red line, carry puck to first coach / player
    • Put puck under stick, skate around the coach / player to pick up puck again
    • Perform the same move at next coach / player
  • 01 performs a flip pass over the stick to 02
    • 01 then skates behind the net
    • 02 passes to 03, who passes to 04
    • 04 then passes to 01
    • 01 shoots on the net

Drill Time Drill Description
10 4 line puck control
  1. Players make bank pass off boards at each pylon
  2. Players skate to second pylon
    • Pivot, skate backwards to first pylon
    • Pivot, skate forward to 4th pylon
    • Pivot, skate backwards to 3rd pylon
  3. Skate forward to next line
    • Skate forward doing 360’s around each pylon
  4. Skate forward, make move on each pylon and skate to start line again

Drill Time Drill Description
15 Pass / Receive Circuit
  • Station One
    • 01 passes to 02, then begins skating
    • 02 passes to 03, 03 passes to 04
    • 01 skates towards the blue line, turns and skates between 02 and 03 to get a pass from 04
    • 01 then takes a shot on net
    • Make sure all the players get to be skaters and passers
  • Station Two
    • 3 players for 4 pylons
    • As one player passes the puck, the player without the puck must move to open pylon so that the puck is always with the middle person
  • Station Three
    • Pig in the middle
    • 2 players pass the puck to each other while the 3rd player tries to stop the pass
    • If the player in the middle stops the pass then he / she switches with the player who gave up the puck
  • Coach works with goalies

Drill Time Drill Description
5 1-2-3 on 0
  • Move nets to each end, on goal line, beow face off dots
  • Players line up outside the blue line, each with a puck
  • 1st player goes in for a shot, keeps going until goal is scored
  • After goal, player skates back outside blue, next player joins in for a 2 on 0
  • 3rd time through, 3 on 0

Peewee Level Practice Plan
Objectives:

  1. Asses and improve acceleration
  2. Assess and improve agilitiy
  3. Assess and improve puck control skills and puck handling

8 Butterfly Warm-up
  • Coach demonstrates or calls out skating actions
  • 1 foot / 2 foot / squats
  • Left / right / both knee touches to ice
  • Mohawk turns / 360’s
  • Backwards
  • Sprints
  • Dive roll
  • 360 spin on knees
  • Progress to with puck

Drill Time Drill Description
10 Three Line Wave
  • 01 starts the drils, 02 then follows, then 03. Continue this rotation until all players have gone.
  • Players carry the puck through the neutral zone and take shots on goal.
  • Players wait until all have completed, then return in the other direction
  • Weave – Follow your pass
  • Weave – drop pass only

8 min Full ice Backcheck
  • Both ends go on whistle
  • 01 on the hash marks, Δ1 has one skate on the goal line
  • On the Coach’s whistle, Δ1 pursues 01
  • At the completion of a repetition, switch lines

Peewee Hockey Practice Plan
Session Objectives

  1. Teach individual offensive tactic: net drive
  2. Reinforce net drives with 2 man attack option
  3. Refine defensive tactice: defend against mid lane net drive
Drill Time Drill Description
8 3 Line Warm-up
  • First player in each line skates to the second pylon and performs a two foot stop; skates back to the first pylon and performs another two foot stop, continues on to the fourth and back to the third and finished at the opposite end of the ice
  • Second player in the line leaves when the first player stops for the second line
  • Key execution points

    • Quick feet out of the stop
    • Face both directions

  • 01 skates cross ice and receives pass from 02
  • 01 executes drive skate by staying wide around pyon, before accelerating to the net
  • Alternate sides go at the same time

Drill Time Drill Description
8 3 line warm up
  • Players line up in 3 groups to allow for 3 wide lanes
  • Players execute a series of skating skills without pucks and with pucks
    • Skate forwards and backwards
    • Striding and tight turns
    • Crossovers
    • Transition forward to backward to forwards

8 Angling Gate Drill
  • 01 and 02 begin on the whistle
  • 01 picks up loose puck and skates behind the net and must skate between the for a shot on goal
  • 02 closes the gap, before angling toward 01
  • 02 attempts to force 01 outside the pylons, not giving up the middle lane

14 Checking stations – Peewee checking drill
  • Station 1 – Continuous Bumping
    • 01 moves slowly along the boards while _1 angles, closes the gap and pins 01 against the boards
    • The two players continue around boards to other side
    • Switch roles the other way
  • Station 2 – Open Ice Contact
    • 0 skates forward as _ skates backwards
    • _ initiates shoulder to chest contact and then continues backwards repeating action across the ice
    • Switch roles on the return across ice
  • Station 3 – 1 on 1 Angling
    • 01 moves slowly along the boards while _1 angles backwards, closes the gap and pins 01 against the boards
    • The two players continue around the boards to the other side
    • Switch roles the other way

Session Objectives

  • Refine the ability to read and react to defensive reponsobilities
  • Refine individual defensive tactic: Defensive side positioning
  • Refine team defensive tactics: Support through awareness and communication

 

Drill Time Drill Description
5 Three Man Weave with Regroups
  • 01 passes to 02 and follows the path of the pass changing lanes
  • Passes continue through the neutral zone, eventually passing to C1 for a regourp
  • Regroup with C2 and attack the net

8 Pressure Forecheck
  • 01 drives to the corner and pins an imaginary opponent “A”
  • 01 spins off check and goes to the net for a feed from the C
  • After quick shot, 01 moves to the opposite corner and pins opponent “B” and spins for 2nd shot
  • Key Execution Points
    • Transition
    • Control
    • Readiness
    • Quick shot

6 Center Line Drill
  • 01 and Δ1 are facing one another
  • 01 goes one ay or the other and Δ1 must react and cover 01
  • C can either pass directly to 01 or shoot on goal with 01 driving for the rebound
  • All players play offence and defense
